STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING FOR YOUR STRUCTURES
QuantumSHM offers wide services in design, implementation and operation of measuring systems for monitoring of the technical condition of various types of structures (Structural Health Monitoring, SHM).
We also offer a complex analysis of the measured data to assess current threats and real state of the structure. Our solutions used are mainly based on the state-of-the-art optical fiber technology (such as: Fiber Bragg Gratings - FBG, SOFO interferometric sensors, Fabry-Perot, Brillouin and Raman scattering systems). Each system allows remote monitoring of the object in "on-line" mode (eg, remote access via www, automatic real-time alerts via e-mail / SMS, etc.).
If you need structural monitoring system for your structure - email us. Together we will find a solution for its safe exploitation!
WHY MONITOR THE STRUCTURES?
Registration of construction behavior during its exploitation
Increase safety of the facility during its exploitation
Notification about emerging construction hazards
Optimization of the construction management processes
Reduce operating costs
Improve knowledge about the structure
Evaluation of the real state of the structure based on reliable information (measurements)
Continuous measurement of various physical quantities
Operation and maintenance of the infrastructure not in "run-to-failure" but in "condition-based" mode
…
SELECTED AREAS OF APPLICATION OF SHM SYSTEMS
Civil engineering and hydrotechnical engineering (bridges, viaducts, buildings, monuments, roads, tunnels, dams, dikes):
Measurements of strain, displacements, inclinations, vibrations
Cracks monitoring
Pre-stress monitoring
Monitoring the creep process
Evaluation of damages after tremors, bumps and others
Distributed temperature and strain measurement at multiple points
Detection and location of leaks
...
Power engineering:
Strain monitoring of the power boilers components: load-bearing structures, strings, walls, etc.
Strain/stress and temperature monitoring of the pipelines (steam, flue gases and exhaust aftertreatment)
Monitoring the cooling tower
Distributed temperature monitoring of electrical power cables
Monitoring the deformation of power lines and high-voltage transmission towers
...
Chemicals industry, pipelines and tanks:
Monitoring the deformation and temperature distribution along the pipelines
Detection and location of the gas leakage (along the whole pipeline), third-party excavation, intrusion detection
Monitoring of the underground fuel tanks
Monitoring high pressure vessels and tanks (composite, steel, automotive - FCV, hydrogen and methane refueling stations, etc.)
...
The above examples do not cover all of the application capabilities of SHM systems. Their goal is to imagine the enormous potential that optical fiber-based monitoring systems provide.

OPTICAL FIBER BASED MEASUREMENT TECHNOLOGY
Point sensors vs. distributed sensors
The point sensors are sensors with a finite length of the measuring arm (transducer). They average the measured value over their entire length. Typical examples are FBG, SOFO or Fabry-Perot sensors for which the length of the measurement base is in ranges from few millimeters to several centimeters or even meters (SOFO sensors).
Successively, the distributed sensors use the whole length of the optical fibers to measure and localize strain and/or temperature changes along the whole sensor and monitor their changes over time. For this purpose, the scattering of light propagated inside optical fiber core is used.
Advantages of optical fiber based measurements methods:
High strain (-3%.. 3%, resolution 1 µe) and temperature (-270... +800°c, resolution 0.1 k) sensitivity
Linear strain and temperature characteristics
Excellent multiplexing properties (possibility of creating a sensor network covering the whole object)
Advantages connected with optical fiber features:
insensitive to high temperature, EM fields, corrosion
no spark (safe for flammable materials)
lightweight and small dimension
easy to integrate with monitored objects
resistance for cyclic loads (no fatigue effect)
Economic efficiency (very good ratio of the number of measuring points to the point price)
Integrated telemetric system (optical fiber used as sensor and as a data transfer)
Passive system - no need of electrical power supply for sensors
